Why cycle here
Slovenia isn't a cycling country the way the Netherlands or parts of France are — there's no dense network of dedicated lanes linking every town, and outside the Ljubljana basin most roads still mean sharing space with cars. What it does have is a small but real set of good routes: former narrow-gauge railway corridors repurposed into flat valley paths, a handful of proper mountain climbs for anyone chasing one, and new paved infrastructure being added most years. Much of what's below is genuinely new — built in the last few years, sometimes the last few months — so expect the occasional route that isn't in your GPS app yet, and check current status before you set out.

A short list, on purpose
This isn't a list padded out with routes that don't hold up — it's a country early in building a real cycling network, with a lot of new, well-built infrastructure and not much filler yet. Expect this page to grow faster than most others on the site; check back if you're planning a trip more than a season out.
