Polhograjska Grmada via Mačkov Graben

Quick Overview – Polhograjska Grmada via Mačkov Graben

A full loop to the highest point of the Polhov Gradec hills: up a stream gorge with small waterfalls, past a working farm, over a short cable-secured rock step to a ridge with real views — then down a different valley past a small chapel and a second farm, instead of retracing your steps.

Trade-off: at nearly 8 km and 528 m of climbing, with one genuine hands-on section near the top, this isn’t a stroll — we’d call it a hard half-day, not moderate. We pick this loop over the out-and-back version specifically because the descent past the chapel and the Mehačk farm is a real change of scenery, not just a formality.

  • Type: hard forest and ridge loop, one cable-secured step
  • Region: Central (Polhov Gradec hills, west of Ljubljana)
  • Works well with: a half-day slot for hikers who want real elevation and don’t mind one exposed handhold section

Trail stats

  • Distance: 7.9 km loop
  • Elevation gain: 528 m
  • Time: ~3.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Hard (steady climb plus one short cable-secured rock step near the ridge)
Weather

Polhograjska Grmada – local conditions

The lower gorge section stays shaded and can be slick after rain, since the trail runs right alongside the Mačkov graben stream for the first stretch. The open ridge near the summit is more exposed to wind than the forest below.

Avoid this one right after heavy rain — the streamside path and the cable-secured step both get genuinely slippery, not just damp.

What to expect

This is one of the most popular hikes for people living in western Ljubljana, and it earns that popularity: real elevation, a genuine change of terrain from stream gorge to open ridge, and a summit that actually delivers a view instead of just trees. Doing it as a loop rather than an out-and-back roughly doubles the amount of new scenery for very little extra distance — the descent past the chapel and Mehačk farm is a different valley entirely, not a variation on the way up.

If 528 m of climbing and a cable-secured step sound like more than you want, the Rašica loop in the same region is a much gentler alternative with its own lookout tower. If you want something with similar exposure but more elevation, Mount Krim from Iška vas gains close to 250 m more.

Route in detail

1) Grajski park and the climb through Mačkov graben

Park at Grajski park on the edge of Polhov Gradec and follow the track alongside the Mačkov graben stream — small waterfalls mark the first stretch. The path passes a handful of houses before the surface changes to an unpaved cart track heading into the trees.

2) Turistična kmetija Gonte

The trail climbs through forest to the Gonte tourist farm, where refreshments are sometimes available. This is the psychological midpoint of the climb — the terrain gets steadily steeper from here toward the ridge.

3) The cable-secured step and the summit

Past Gonte the path crosses open slopes, re-enters forest, and reaches a short section secured with a steel cable before emerging onto the main ridge. It’s brief, not technical climbing, but it’s a real handhold section — worth knowing about in advance rather than discovering it cold. Several paths converge on the ridge before the final approach to Polhograjska Grmada. On a clear day the summit view takes in the Julian and Kamnik-Savinja Alps, the Krim range to the south, the hills of Notranjska, and the flat wetland of the Ljubljana Marshes below.

4) Down past the Church of St. Ursula

Instead of retracing the climb, the loop descends a different line into a side valley, passing the small Church of St. Ursula. It’s a quiet, low-key waypoint — no crowds, just a chance to catch your breath on the way down before the final stretch.

5) Izletniška kmetija Mehačk and the return to Grajski park

The path continues past the Mehačk farm, another working farm with occasional refreshments, before rejoining the lower valley and returning to Grajski park. This return leg is noticeably gentler underfoot than the descent from the ridge itself.

Travel insurance

Standard policies often exclude hiking and mountain activities — worth checking your cover before a day like this.

Map

The map shows the full loop: up through Mačkov graben and Gonte to the summit, then down a different valley past the Church of St. Ursula and Mehačk farm back to Grajski park.

Best time

  • Late spring and early summer: the gorge stream is running well without being dangerously high.
  • Clear autumn days: the best odds of an open ridge view, without summer haze.
  • Avoid right after heavy rain: the streamside path and cable step both get slick.

Safety & warnings

  • Cable-secured rock step: short but real — needs decent footwear and a free hand, not a stroll-in-sandals section.
  • Streamside path: slippery when wet, especially on the rocks near the small waterfalls.
  • Exposed ridge: more wind-affected than the forest below — bring a layer even on a warm day.
  • Loop, not out-and-back: the descent uses a different valley than the climb — follow the markers rather than trying to retrace your ascent.

Logistics

By car

Polhov Gradec is about 30 minutes from central Ljubljana, mostly on regular roads — an easy half-day trip without needing to leave early. Park at Grajski park on the edge of the village.

Public transport

Buses run from Ljubljana to Polhov Gradec, but services are limited outside commuting hours — check the timetable both ways before relying on it for a same-day return.

Renting a car for trail days

Many of the trails on our portal are realistically done by car: early starts, flexible returns and last-mile forest or valley access are hard to match with buses.

How this trail fits into routes

Polhograjska Grmada is a strong half-day option for anyone based in Ljubljana who wants real elevation without a long drive.

Conclusion

Polhograjska Grmada as a full loop is the trail to pick when Ljubljana starts to feel too easy to reach and you want a hike that actually earns its view — real forest, a real gorge, a real ridge, and a genuinely different way back down. Just don’t underestimate the climb, the cable step, or the extra distance because the drive there was short.
