Kozjak Waterfall Loop Trail
Quick Overview – Kozjak Waterfall Loop Trail
MUST-SEE A compact loop trail near Kobarid that delivers two waterfalls, finishing with the dramatic chamber of Veliki Kozjak. The path mixes forest track, wooden walkways and a narrow gorge section, so it feels like “real terrain” without being a long hike.
Trade-off: it is busy and managed. We still do it because the payoff is high and the loop keeps the day efficient. If we want a quieter gorge mood after, we pivot to Koseč Gorges instead of chasing another crowded highlight.
- Type: easy waterfall loop trail
- Region: Soča Valley (Kobarid area)
- Works well with: Soča Valley highlights day, Kobarid stops and transit days
Trail stats
- Distance: 4.7 km
- Elevation gain: 217 m
- Time: ~1.5–2 hours at relaxed pace (longer if you queue near the gorge)
- Difficulty: Easy (footing and moisture matter more than effort)
What to expect
Kozjak is a “short distance, high impact” stop. The path is clear and mostly straightforward, but the gorge section compresses people into narrow space, so pace is often set by whoever is ahead.
The vibe is different from broader river walks like the Soča River Gorge. Here it is enclosed, shaded and damp, with walkways doing the access work. It is worth it, just don’t expect quiet at midday in summer.
Route in detail
1) Free parking and start
Park at the free parking and start the loop from the same point. This is the cleanest setup because you return to the car without backtracking. The paid camping parking is a workable fallback when the free area is full, but it adds crowd pressure at the start.
2) Easy forest approach
The first part is gentle forest walking. Use it to settle into a slower rhythm, because the gorge section rewards patience. Rushing is where people slip, not on the “hard bits”.
3) Mali Kozjak
Mali Kozjak is the early payoff. It is smaller, often less crowded and it’s a good reality check: if the rock is already slick and busy, we slow down and keep spacing, or we call it early and shift to Tolmin Gorge later when timing is better.
4) Veliki Kozjak waterfall chamber
Veliki Kozjak is the reason this loop exists. The waterfall drops into a circular rock chamber and the sound alone changes the mood. The best photos come from waiting for gaps and shooting from edges, not pushing into the centre cluster.
5) Return via Soča viewpoint
The loop exits back through forest and opens at a viewpoint above the Soča. It’s a good reset after the enclosed gorge. If the day stays stable, we often add one more calm stop like Javorca Church for contrast.
Map
The map shows our full loop line (GeoJSON) and the key markers: free and paid parking, Mali Kozjak, Veliki Kozjak and a Soča River viewpoint.
Best time
- Early morning: fewer people in the gorge, cleaner photos and less waiting.
- Late afternoon: softer light, but shaded damp sections can feel slicker.
- Shoulder season days: calmer trail rhythm, still strong flow if it has rained recently.
Safety & warnings
- Slippery surfaces: wet timber, wet stone and spray near the chamber are the main risk.
- Crowds in tight space: expect stop-start movement, especially near Veliki Kozjak.
- Footwear: closed shoes with grip. This is not a sandals stop.
Logistics
By car
Car access keeps the day flexible. Start early, finish fast and keep the rest of the Soča Valley open. If parking is chaotic, don’t force it. Pivot to Soča River Gorge first, then return later.
Public transport
It can work via Kobarid, but connections add friction. This trail is most valuable when it stays low-effort and low-planning.
Renting a car for trail days
Many of the trails on our portal are realistically done by car: early starts, flexible returns and last-mile forest or valley access are hard to match with buses.

Author note: for trail days, choose a compact car with free cancellation and avoid very late starts on longer routes.
How this trail fits into routes
Kozjak is our short, reliable “anchor stop” in the lower Soča Valley. It gives a big visual reward without draining the day.
- One-day: use it inside our Soča Valley highlights plan with Tolmin Gorge as the second main nature hit.
- Quieter add-on: if we want something calmer after crowds, Koseč Gorges is a good contrast without adding a long drive.
- Culture contrast: Javorca Church works well when we want a different kind of “meaning” after waterfalls.
Conclusion
Kozjak is popular because it delivers. As a loop trail it stays efficient, simple and easy to slot into a Soča Valley day. Go early, accept the managed nature of it and move carefully on wet sections. The reward is one of the strongest waterfall scenes in Slovenia for the effort spent.
