Introduction – a quiet alternative to Kozjak

Koseč Gorges (Koseška korita) are a set of narrow limestone passages carved by a small mountain stream above Kobarid. While visitors crowd the famous Kozjak waterfall just a few kilometres away, Koseč remains peaceful, rural and almost forgotten — a mix of mossy walls, short wooden bridges and quiet forest.

The route forms a simple circular hike starting directly from the village. It is short, calm and perfect for anyone wanting a low-effort hidden gem with real atmosphere.

Take it easy: The gorge itself is compact — don’t expect dramatic drops. The charm here is calmness, textures and rural scenery.

Why visit Koseč Gorges

  • Peaceful and uncrowded: a rare quiet spot in the busy Kobarid area.
  • Short, pretty gorge: mossy limestone walls and a small stream shaping the passages.
  • Circular route: no need to return the same way — the trail loops naturally.
  • Historic add-on: the Church of St. Just is one of the oldest in the region.
Local note: In summer mornings the gorge stays perfectly cool — a good contrast to the hotter Soča valley floor.

What to expect

  • Terrain: narrow passages, forest paths, wooden bridges, short limestone steps.
  • Hazards: slippery stone after rain; watch footing on mossy sections.
  • Seasonality: light snow in winter can make bridges icy — caution needed.
  • Navigation: circular route is marked; very easy to follow from Koseč.
  • Footwear: regular hiking shoes; no technical gear required.
  • Families: suitable for children who can handle short climbs.
Safety tip: Do not enter the gorge after heavy storms — the stream rises quickly in narrow sections.

Highlights along the route

1. Entrance from Koseč village

The trail drops from the village into a forest corridor where the sound of the stream begins to echo between limestone walls.

2. Narrow gorge passage Must-see

The central section — mossy rock, wooden bridges and a small but atmospheric canyon floor.

Highlight: Look back towards the bridge as you cross — the layered limestone walls create a clean, graphic composition.

3. St. Just Church

After exiting the gorge, the trail gently climbs to the Church of St. Just (Sv. Just), standing alone above meadows with views toward the Soča mountains.
