Introduction – understanding the Karst
The Karst region is defined by absence as much as presence: missing rivers, collapsed valleys, underground systems and sudden openings. This loop introduces that logic step by step — from a controlled cave environment to open landscapes where water has reshaped the land.
Why choose this route
- Strong narrative: underground → cliffside → open karst.
- Minimal backtracking: clear loop structure.
- Flexible finish: choose between nature walk or scenic drive.
- Accessible: no technical terrain required.
What to expect
- Postojna Cave: guided visit with fixed timing.
- Predjama: short walks, dramatic setting.
- Rakov Škocjan: open valley, bridges, sinkholes.
- Nanos: long drive, wide views, exposure to wind.
Where to stay if you’re basing this route in Ljubljana
Ljubljana works well as a base for the Postojna & Karst loop — you stay in one hotel, leave early via the highway and return the same day without repacking or moving between towns.

Route in detail – key stops
Stop 1 – Postojna Cave Must-see
Start the day with Postojna Cave, Slovenia’s most extensive and accessible cave system. The visit is guided and time-based, which is why it works best first thing in the morning.
Expect large chambers, underground rail sections and controlled paths. The experience is impressive, but structured — treat it as an introduction, not the whole story.
Stop 2 – Predjama Castle Must-see
A short drive brings you to Predjama Castle, built directly into a vertical limestone cliff. The setting explains its history better than any exhibition.
Walk the perimeter, take in the scale from below, and understand how the cave system behind the castle shaped its defence.

Stop 3 – Rakov Škocjan karst valley
In the afternoon, shift to open karst landscapes at Rakov Škocjan. Collapsed cave ceilings have created a wide valley with natural bridges, sinkholes and seasonal streams.
Several informal parking pockets exist along the access road. Use the interactive map on this site to locate the most suitable spots on the day. Flat paths allow short or longer walks depending on time and energy.
Optional – Planina Cave
If you prefer another underground experience instead of Rakov Škocjan, Planina Cave is a strong alternative. It is less monumental than Postojna but more raw, with visible underground rivers and a quieter atmosphere.
Optional – Nanos Plateau
The Nanos Plateau is a demanding optional extension that involves a real climb. From the access parking, the route gains significant height in a relatively short distance.
- Distance: ~3 km one way (6 km return)
- Start elevation: ~580 m
- Highest point: ~1240 m
- Total elevation gain: ~660 m
The terrain is open and exposed, often windy, with little natural shelter. While technically straightforward, the climb is sustained and should only be attempted if you have enough time, energy and stable weather.

Conclusion
This Postojna–Karst loop works because it explains the landscape instead of overwhelming it. One major cave, one dramatic castle and one open karst valley create a clear, memorable picture of how water shaped this region.
