Mostnica Gorge and Voje Valley Trail
Quick Overview – Mostnica Gorge and Voje Valley Trail
MUST-SEE This is one of the most flexible walks in the Bohinj area. You can keep it short and easy by following the Mostnica Gorge boardwalk and turning back early, or you can continue deeper into Voje Valley for a full half-day alpine walk.
The gorge gives you the drama. Voje gives you space, rhythm and distance. The choice is not about ambition, but about time and energy.
- Type: gorge trail and alpine valley walk
- Region: Julian Alps (Bohinj area)

What to expect
The Mostnica Gorge section is compact and immediate. Water cuts deep into limestone, the path stays close to the river and short boardwalks guide you through the narrowest parts. It feels contained and focused, even when other people are around.
Once you leave the gorge behind, the atmosphere changes completely. The trail opens into Voje Valley, following the river through forest and meadow. It becomes quieter, longer and more physical, not because of steep climbs, but because distance starts to matter.
Route in detail
1) Stara Fužina parking to Mostnica Gorge
Park in or near Stara Fužina and walk to the gorge entrance. This first section is simple and well marked. It sets expectations early: this is a maintained path, not a wild scramble.
2) Mostnica Gorge boardwalk
The gorge is the visual highlight. Wooden walkways, short bridges and narrow rock corridors keep you close to the water. The walking itself is easy, but surfaces can be damp and polished. Foot placement matters more than speed.
3) Turnaround point (easy option)
If you are short on time, or walking with children, this is where you turn back. You have seen the core of the gorge, and returning the same way keeps the walk relaxed and predictable.
4) Voje Valley continuation (moderate option)
Continuing past the gorge shifts the character of the day. The trail stretches out, following the river upstream into Voje Valley. You pass open sections, forest paths and eventually reach the Mostnica waterfall area.
This part is not technically difficult, but it is longer and more committing. Once you choose this option, you are in for a proper walk, not a short attraction loop.
Map
The map shows the full Voje Valley route. The turnaround point for the easy gorge walk is marked, so you can decide on the ground whether to continue or head back.
Best time
- Morning: cooler temperatures and calmer flow in the gorge.
- After rain: water levels rise and the gorge looks stronger, but boardwalks become slippery.
- High summer: the gorge stays pleasant, while Voje Valley can feel warm and exposed.
Safety and trade-offs
- Slippery sections: damp wood and smooth stone require steady footing, especially in the gorge.
- Distance commitment: the Voje option is easy to underestimate. Once past the gorge, turning back feels long.
- Weather: light rain is manageable, but sustained wet conditions change the feel of the trail quickly.
Logistics
By car
Driving to Stara Fužina is the simplest option. Parking fills up in peak season, so arriving earlier in the day reduces friction and keeps the choice between short and long variants open.
Public transport
Buses reach Bohinj and Stara Fužina, but timing matters. If you plan the full Voje Valley walk, make sure your return connection is not tight.
Renting a car for trail days
Many of the trails on our portal are realistically done by car: early starts, flexible returns and last-mile forest or valley access are hard to match with buses.

Author note: for trail days, choose a compact car with free cancellation and avoid very late starts on longer routes.
How this trail fits into routes
- Bohinj base days: ideal as a flexible day where you decide the effort on the spot.
- Mixed groups: one group can turn back at the gorge while others continue.
- Multi-day trips: works best on a lighter day between longer alpine walks.
Conclusion
Mostnica Gorge and Voje Valley work because they do not force a single decision. You start easy, read your energy and then choose how far the day goes. Treat the gorge as the minimum reward, and the valley as the extension you earn if conditions and legs agree.
