Introduction – a wooden ridge above Bohinj

Zajamniki is a traditional alpine pasture settlement on the Pokljuka Plateau: a linear row of dark wooden shepherd’s huts stretched across an open grassy ridge. Below, the Bohinj valley sits hidden; in front, the Julian Alps form a full skyline of peaks.

Unlike the busy lake shore and cable car viewpoints, Zajamniki feels quiet and self-contained. It is close in distance to Bohinj, but mentally far away – more about stillness, slow walking and long horizontal views than about “must-see” attractions.

Take it easy: Zajamniki is not a place to rush through. Plan enough time to simply walk the ridge, sit in the grass and watch the mountains change with the light.

Why visit Zajamniki

  • Iconic wooden ridge: a line of preserved shepherd huts on a natural balcony above Bohinj.
  • Wide alpine views: clear sightlines towards Triglav and the central Julian Alps.
  • Calmer than the lake: far fewer people than around Bled or the Bohinj lakefront.
  • Flexible access: you can hike, bike or drive close and walk the last section.
Local note: In summer some huts still serve dairy products from the surrounding pastures – a reminder that this is a working landscape, not just a viewpoint.

What to expect

  • Terrain: gravel forest roads and soft meadow paths along the ridge.
  • Hazards: limited – mainly uneven ground, wet grass after rain and occasional vehicles on the forest road.
  • Seasonality: in late autumn and winter roads and meadows can be snow-covered or icy; access then depends on conditions.
  • Navigation: the main approach follows forest roads; once on the ridge, orientation is straightforward.
  • Footwear: light hiking shoes or sturdy trainers are sufficient in dry conditions.
  • Families: very suitable for children who can comfortably walk 1–2 hours on gentle terrain.
Safety tip: Respect fences, meadows and private land around the huts. Do not drive all the way onto the pasture if a lower parking or pull-out is available.

Highlights along the ridge

1. First view of the huts Must-see

As you leave the forest and step onto the ridge, the first impression is of space: a row of wooden cottages, open pasture and the mountains lined up beyond. This is the classic Zajamniki view that appears in most photographs.

Highlight: Walk a little further along the ridge before taking photos – the perspective improves as the huts and peaks align more cleanly.

2. Walking the wooden village

Follow the main track as it threads past the huts. Small variations in angle change the composition: sometimes the cottages dominate, sometimes the mountains. It is a slow, simple walk.

3. Quiet corners and side views

Towards the ends of the ridge, the settlement thins out and the atmosphere becomes quieter. Here you get more sense of the surrounding forest and side valleys of Pokljuka.

Practical route outline

  • Starting point: Forest road on the Pokljuka Plateau (near Goreljek) – park in a sensible pull-out before the pasture itself.
  • Phase 1: Follow the gravel road through spruce forest towards Zajamniki.
  • Phase 2: Reach the first huts and step out onto the ridge.
  • Phase 3: Walk the ridge in either direction, exploring different views.
  • Turnaround: Return along the same road once you have walked enough of the ridge.
  • Total time: 1.5–2.5 hours depending on where you park and how far you walk.
Local tip: For photographers, sunrise and early morning often bring low clouds in the valleys and clear light on the huts and peaks.
